Who We Are
The Jackson County Prevention Coalition is a group of local residents, professionals and youth who have come together for a common goal: the safety and well-being of our children and our communities by working to reduce youth substance use and its negative consequences.
We have one paid staff person as a non-profit organization, and work with a large group of committed and passionate volunteers who serve on our board and various committees.
We meet monthly on the third Wednesday of every month at 9:00 a.m., either
virtually or in person in the basement of the Jackson County Courthouse in Maquoketa.
Our work groups are substance-focused. Each group meets once a month to identify ways that will discourage drug use in kids. We use a public health model called the Strategic Prevention Framework to guide the work we do. We choose strategies that are evidenced based, that have been researched and found to yield constituent, positive results. Prevention science is truly a science and we use the best practices to guide our work.
Our work groups brainstorm for and develop strategies
that promote prevention of the use of:
- Alcohol
- Tobacco
- Marijuana
- Opioids
- Gambling
